BIO:
Lead instructor Evan Gavry grew up around music (his father plays guitar, fiddle, and accordion) and studied alto saxophone from 4th grade to 12th grade. He also took piano lessons from 6th grade to 8th grade. Evan played saxophone in the award-winning Amsterdam Marching Rams marching band all four years of high school, as well as the high school concert band. He started playing guitar when he was a junior in high school and is largely self-taught on the instrument (although obviously informed by his formal woodwind and piano studies); at the same time he was learning punk, heavy metal, 90’s alternative, and classic rock in high school garage bands, he picked up bluegrass, country, and Irish fiddle tunes playing with his dad at festivals and jams. Evan played guitar with the high school jazz band and began playing out with rock bands his senior year. He hasn’t stopped since.
Evan has a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Studies (focused on TV and Radio Production) from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. He mixes live sound (front of house and monitors) and engineers, mixes, and masters for recording. He has set, operated, struck and stored a full range of event production materials: stage deck, pipe and drape, audio, lighting, video, projection, band backline, and recording. He has done some regional tour management for national touring artists and managed a college nightclub (staffing, technical staffing and training, security, and artist/backline management seven nights a week). He has worked door/security in a high-volume tourist area (400+ capacity brew pub across the street from Fenway Park in Boston and a seafood restaurant/bar directly on Mardi Gras parade routes in New Orleans) and worked merchandise at club shows and large festivals. He’s designed promotional materials for web, digital displays, and hard copy posters. Evan has experience designing and producing screen-printed posters and t-shirts. He has booked and promoted shows in the greater New Orleans LA, Boston MA, and Albany NY areas and was on the planning committee for the 2014 New England Americana Festival in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA.
